I would suggest marking your presence in a social media helps generate visit in your blog ... you just have to brand your blog as if it is a necessity that without it the life of your viewers are incomplete in a day without a vsit ..
I have tried all of the above except forum commenting because I don't know of any good forums to join. Can you make recommendations based on niche?
I try to come out with a unique idea every month like a poll, a contest or an interactive post.
I have joined a forum and I did put my links in the signature. It's so effective that I gained a traffic!
And I try to make sure to promote my blog in any social networking sites. :D
Pretty solid advice, but bear in mind that for social media to be effective in promoting blog posts, one must have a decent social strategy and network in place :)

I cannot agree more, social networking is the most effective way to promote your blog and gain a good traffic share. Commenting to other known good blogs also helps a lot, I just found this one out recently!!
I've tried all except Forum Commenting. I should one day explore that. My niche often warrants discussion (parenting).
